Humans have built a world in which we have to do minimal manual labor. The world that once worked tirelessly to live — hunting, fishing, farming — has now freed-up time. Technology and the progress of society give us a life outside of staying alive. Globalization and modernization have given us the gift that our ancestors have longed for: time.

However, we don’t always make use of that time. Often, we find ourselves plopped in front of a TV at the end of the day or on the weekend. This spare time people have craved throughout history goes to waste on people of the present day, especially during times like these.

This is not to say TV and movies are a waste of time; they are art that should be celebrated. However, they should not be the only thing we spend our free time on. We go to school, work, take care of our loved ones, cook, clean, and do other chores. The free time we have should be our time for experiences. Our time to grow. Our time to love. Not our time to vegetate.

Before the pandemic, I spent every moment doing stuff. I spent my time outside of work cleaning, cooking, and socializing. In a covid ridden world, the socialization stopped. I found myself watching hours and hours of TV. I realized I had nothing to fill my time. Nothing that I wanted to do.

Then, I realized there are so many things that I really love to do. Things I loved to do as a child that I had given up for work and drinking at the bar. Things that bring me joy. I have so many hobbies — board games, walking, trivia, cooking, classic video games, yoga, bracelet making, playing cards — all these things make me happy.

Remind yourself of these things you enjoy. Maybe it’s baseball or classical music. Maybe it’s hiking or bowling. These things are precious. They are what keeps us alive, what keeps us human, what keeps us happy. They aren’t things you just have to do alone. You can do them with friends. You can do them with strangers — people who will soon become your new friends.

can help you find your hobbies again, connect you with like-minded people, and fill your free time with happiness. Don’t disgrace our ancestors who fought for years for more free time in their days and lives. today and remind yourself of things that bring you joy.
